it's sort of incredible to watch a post-FLCL gainax try and make what'd start off as a bog standard mecha show. tsuromaki & enikido end up finding… Breanna.
Nono is a clumsy waitress who dreams of becoming a space pilot. One day, she meets Lal'C Melk Mark, a member of the elite psychic pilot team "Topless." But when space monsters appear from out of nowhere to wreak havoc on Mars, Lal'C calls out her Buster Machine—codenamed "Dix-Neuf"—to subdue the threat. During a battle with a Space Monster, Lal'C gets the surprise of her life when she sees Nono use her super-strength to help Dix-Neuf destroy the alien. From that point, Nono hangs along with Lal'C in hopes of becoming a member of Topless.

This double feature comprises of Gunbuster and Die Buster (aka Gunbuster 2) condensed them into a single theatrical release told in two parts.

Gainax has always made pretty pictures. Sometimes the studio has combined them with passionate, intelligent, and controversial content. Their oeuvre includes deep programs like Wings of Honneamise and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Some of their other creations like Gunbuster and FLCL aren't quite as thoughtful but are still a lot of fun. You can fault them for their prediliction for unnecessary fan service (is there any other kind?), but they are one of the best animation houses in Japan, period.

The problem with many anime franchise sequels is that they assume you enjoyed the original show enough to push along weak material involving the same characters you already know and enjoy. The problem with other sequels is that they generate a new storyline involving the initial concept, but spun in a radically different approach that pulls all the life out of the original.
