Administrative law judge Marie Bellamy-Johnson By Kenan Heise TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Marie C. Bellamy-Johnson, 84, an attorney and retired administrative hearing judge for the Illinois Department of Labor, in 1947 became the first African-American woman to graduate from John Marshall Law School. A resident of Marina Towers, she died Sunday in Resurrection Hospital. She was born in Boley, an all-black town known for its annual rodeos. Her grandfather, Louis Taylor, was an inspiration to her.
He had been a minister as well as a lawyer, reopening his legal practice at the age of 83. Mrs. Bellamy in the mid-1940s was working at a real estate firm while attending law school. She also was a mother while in school and bore two more children during her three years as a student at John Marshall. "She missed, at most, two weeks of class for the birth of each one," her son Harold said.
"When she graduated, there was an article in the Chicago Defender showing her and her three children. I remember her, when I was a child, bringing home the first money she ever earned as a lawyer. She proudly threw it on the bed and said, 'That's what it's all her son said. Mrs. Bellamy-Johnson had a general practice from 1948 to 1958.
After serving for four years with the IRS, she joined the Illinois Labor Department in 1963, working first in unemployment compensation and later for the Illinois Department of Employment Security. She retired in 1987. She was a former vice president of the National Association of Administrative Law Judges. In 1985, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the John Marshall Law School Alumni Association. Other survivors include a daughter, Viola Matthews; six grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren.

A resident of Cary, he died Monday in Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. After working 24 years for American Cyanamid, Mr. Reband retired about 10 years ago. He was a private at Anzio, Italy, when his unit ran out of ammunition and was captured by the Germans. His wife, Adele, did not know for nine more months that he was alive.
He was listed during that time as missing in action. "After they became prisoners, they had to march and she said. "They marched from one end of Germany to the other. His feet froze at one point and he had trouble with them for the rest of his life." Mr. Reband was eventually put ners, which provides venture capital for area homebuilders.

Devon Avenue, Rosemont, IL 60018 Tsutakiyokomatsu Asaji Japan's oldest geisha, 102; retired in April ASSOCIATED PRESS TOKYO- -Japan's oldest geisha, one of the last links to a fading and much-misunderstood artistic tradition, has died of kidney failure. Tsutakiyokomatsu Asaji was 102. Her family said she died Sunday in a Tokyo hospital. Born Haru Kato, Ms. Asaji spent nearly 90 years as a geisha, performing the refined songs and dances of geisha tradition until she fell ill and retired in April.
Over the years, her customers came from the elite ranks of Japan's politicians and business leaders. Geisha -which literally means "arts often assumed, especially by Westerners, to be prostitutes. While some do develop intimate relationships with customers who become their patrons, the profession has a rigorous and centuries-old etiquette. Though a skilled geisha can have a lifelong career, as Ms. Asaji did, the number of what purists consider true practitioners declined with the emergence of Western-style hostess bars.
Geisha skills -music, dance, smiles, charming conversation and the serving of sake-don't come cheap. An evening's fee for a geisha party can easily run into the thousands of dollars, and Japan's long recession put a damper on such lavish business entertainment. Ms. Asaji entered Japan's entertainment world as an 11-year-old apprentice in 1905. Stuart M.
